about me

Who am I?

Hi, I’m Emma, and I love proofreading and editing! I’m a freelance writer and mother of two living in South Australia.

My background

I’ve always been an avid reader and writer, and I studied Literature and English for Professional Purposes at University.

I’ve been blogging at Small Footprints, Big Adventures since 2017, and have won several awards for my educational content about living and travelling sustainably with kids. I’ve also written content for other travel and lifestyle websites, including Medium’s Authority Magazine, Elephant Journal, and Ecophiles.

Before starting my blog I worked as the Business and Communications Administrator for a busy faculty office at the University of Adelaide. And before that, I worked as a Project Officer for a wine industry education and training council.

I was always involved in proofreading and editing in my previous jobs, and find myself correcting novels, web articles and emails all the time!

Recent work

In my freelance work over the past few years I’ve completed a diverse range of projects, including researching and writing finance articles for a major website and blog posts for an Australian University; creating career summaries for Global Talent VISA applicants; and assisting writing and proofreading an annual report for a non-profit health organisation.

I’ve also conducted interviews for articles and State award nominations for nurses, and edited educational materials for kids travelling around Australia.

Areas of expertise

Why use me and not AI?

I’ve been around longer than AI! I’ve been writing and editing for over 20 years. I keep up with trends and best practices, and perhaps most importantly, I understand context and intention. My proofreading retains your voice and is mindful of modern ethical considerations.

Also, I understand your audience and method of publishing. For example, words written for the screen should be formatted differently than a printed book. And text written for business purposes is very different to text written to teach children or engage readers in a blog post.

Finally, I’m finding that I need to proofread and edit AI-generated content now! Because AI is so new it misses the mark on complex writing, and it can get facts very wrong. It also writes very dry articles that often need a more personal touch.

AI can be a fast and handy tool but working in conjunction with a professional writer will maximise your results.
